I will be building my first full custom loop in  a couple of weeks and need some help deciding on a pump. For now it will be a cpu only loop with a single 240mm Radiator. So is there anything out there besides the mcp655 and mcp35x? I'd like to go as cheap as possible but obviously this is not a part I want to skimp on. What pump would be my best bet?

Thanks!

Should I go speed control or no speed control?

I'd go with the speed control one, as it might get noisy under certain conditions [make sure you isolate it from the case in terms of vibration] Because on 1-3 the pump will be nearly inaudible and you'll get about the same temps as when ramped up to the max, using it, really awesome pump :)

That's your answer. Best pump by far, lowest noise, best mtbf, and so on and so forth. Don't cheap out on your pump, or you gonna have a bad time ^^

Err. Why would you recommend the MCP655. Its by all means a good pump but not better than any other Laing D5 pump. You can get cheaper D5 pumps than the MCP655 that are the exact same physical object.

Hmm, I was under the impression that it's the same as a D5 pump O.o On aquatuning.ch mcp655 is the cheapest solution O.o

I said "any other D5 pump". It is a D5 pump but price varies from country to country and even between retailers. That's why its bad to recommend a specific D5 pump. Have a look at a UK site: http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/customer/Laing-D5-Pumps-cid-2035.html (ignoring the D4 pumps)

The MCP655 is the most expensive pump here aside from pumps with extra features.

Weird. How ever, he surely won't go wrong with the MCP655 ^^

He won't go wrong with it but he will pay more for no reason. Its the exact same pump as any other D5 pump (excluding any extras other pumps may have).

Notice the OPs original question: "So is there anything out there besides the mcp655 and mcp35x? I'd like to go as cheap as possible."

Same thing goes for the MCP35X pump. That's just a Laing DDC pump (although you need to watch out for version numbers with Laing DDC)

I can't find any d5 variants cheaper than the mcp655 in the U.S. Am I missing something?

The MCP655 should be fine then. Ghost was just pointing out that in other places, the MCP655 is not the cheapest Laing D5 pump, but it is in the US currently. How much does it cost and at what store?

An example would be EK selling the "motor core" only for about 65€ (I think the swiftech 655 is like 80-85€).

However you then need to buy a new pump top, but I think most people do that anyway because of the 1/4" threads on them and different in/out positions and some of them also increase the pressure (iirc) by 20% (according to EK - again iirc).

I think some of the confusion is that the MCP655 is just really well known, some even call their D5 pump "the MCP655" because they think thats the same, eventhough that is only Swiftechs name for the D5 pump. D5 pumps are only rebranden from leing (if im not mistaken)

(Comming soon)

Correct but there are also multiple versions of the MCP655.
