I have windows 7 but I hear windows 8 works slightly faster.

I'd go with 8.1, it's much more similar to Windows 10, and that's what I'm currently upgrading to on my rig

I prefer 8.1 now, but really it doesn't matter since both will give you access to Windows 10 initially.

8.1. DO NOT GET AN OEM VERSION. You will not be able to change motherboards or remove it from your board.

Games don't really need to support a new iteration of Windows. The same Win32 code base is there and the needed DirectX API is available. You should be able to run most games on Windows 10 TP right now with minimal problems. I would go with Windows 8.1 over clunky Windows 7.

You do NOT have to pay for windows 10 if you upgrade to it within a year of Win 10 being released.
