Hi, is it just me or is it cheaper to add storage to a laptop yourself.
Just as an example: I could buy a razer blade with 128 GB of M.2 or a razer blade with 512GB of M.2 the price diff is over 400 dollars.
I could buy a M.2 512 GB for about 240 euros. Not that I want to waste my money on razer devices, but is this a trend? Is it actually better to buy the M.2 yourself and just add it in yourself? I understand there is faster M.2 storage but the speed diff. isnt worth 200 bucks to me.

So the question, is it better to buy a laptop with as little as possible storage (and maybe ram?) and add whatever you want in yourself?
This question also extends to buying a laptop with 2.5 inch ssd/hdd and switching it yourself.

Depends on warranty terms... most companies void your warranty once you open it up yourself..

So... unless you're confident that your machine won't break down during the warranty period, then go ahead and put it in yourself... but should anything happen, you're on your own...

Since when does adding extra ram or switching a HDD void your warranty?

EDIT: Especially if you can switch them back for RMA

Retailers here put a tamper-proof sticker on important screw holes so if you open it up, the seal is broken and your warranty is void... (I even saw one with all the screw holes covered with the stickers)

Which is why it's important to read warranty terms because some manufacturers offer direct service if it's covered...

Some have stipulations where if the parts are not the ones they put in at the factory they won't warranty it, simple thing is to replace the original parts in it when RMA if needed, but replacing your own M.2 or SSD in a laptop is usually a better option as long as you know what your doing since you'll be paying for the upgrade from Razer itself but not get an extra M.2 drive like you would by upgrading yourself. You could always use it somewhere else in another system.

Yeah I've seen those stickers before as well. Usually when I visit clients where I fix laptops I dont see any stickers on screws though.
But I cant see how companies can charge you live 50 bucks for 2 year warranty + charge you like double for some parts and if you open it up your warranty is void.

Essentialy you are paying like $400 of warranty on an expensive laptop then or you justify it being a 200 dollar job to slide a M.2 in :P
