Hello community! I have a small question to ask. If I buy a laptop with an AMD R9 M290X, and install a linux distro for the OS will it run faster or the same as an Invidia/Intel laptop. I am just asking because I heard some news that AMD gpus will run up to 60% faster on a linux OS. This is interesting to me because I see a lot of budget laptops with R9 M290Xs and wanted to know if it really will run faster than a more expensive laptop with gtx 980's.

NOTES:

Before you tell me that I shouldn't switch to linux please bear in mind that I am not interested in BF4 and other triple-A gaming titles. I spend most of my time playing minecraft.

From what i know Nvidia drivers are allot better on Linux, however, you shouldn't notice any huge differences based on your needs. I would warn you about Maxwell based gpus by Nvidia, they have little to no support in older kernel versions [such as the one Ubuntu 14.04 uses] and requires terminal work to get going. But the AMD card will run pretty much as it should and the same with Nvidia.

If your able to re-install widows yourself (ie. you have the installation and driver discs), there is no harm in trying out Linux. Though I don't recommend you use it unless you want to learn how to use terminal. Because from my experience terminal is a big part of using any Linux distro.

for the difference between nvidia and amd gpus its a bit shady, since theres two sets of drivers for both GPUs an opensource driver, and a proprietary driver.

some things run better on linux than on windows, some the other way around. the advantage *some* linux distros have over windows is they are less bogged down, giving you more resources to direct to your game.
