Hey People

I am planning to build a home media server with least expense possible.

I am looking at intel pentium g2010 or amd athlon x2 270, but i am not sure that weather it will be able to transcode hd videos properly.

Also i read somewhere that you need good gpu for htpc use.

It would be great if i can know how much power do i need.

Wait. What are you building?

A Home Media Server?

A HTPC?

Those are two different things. A Home Media Server is basically the place you store and stream all your media from. A HTPC is a computer dedicated to playing media in a certain room of your house.

Or I could be wrong about that, but that's how I've always understood it.

If you want a Home Media Server, I can help you with that. It would cost around $300-$600 (depending on how much storage you want/need).

I can't help with an HTPC. Those are not very different from building a gaming computer (or any computer for that matter).

Not really, they are just like any other computer with a major change being the type of case.

Just watched this a few days ago to get some ideas for one of my own.  As well as the rest of the series.

You can say i am building an all-in-one, a server that would also be sometimes used for content consumption.

That can be a problem if it is in the living room as a server can get loud if the hard drives are all spinning, and it would become quite irritating for yourself and anyone else with you.

Where i live, noise from the computer is not that big of a deal, and also i will only run two drives. Also i have already purchased the drives, all i want is motherboard, cpu and ram suggestions.

Do you have a HTPC case as well?

Just watch the video I posted above, they should be fine as you dont need allot of power for a HTPC or a low use home server.

So does this means that i can get away with a dual core petium or athlon?? I dont want any hiccups during streaming 1080p videos.

Easily, you dont need a quad core at all. If anything get one of the AMD A4 6300 APU's. 2 core with a good graphics core to watch in 1080p  Or you can get an A6 which is a quad core.
