970 vs 990 chipset?

Whats the difference performance wise? is the 990 worth the extra money?

Its not a big difference, but if you are doing any overclocking I would get a 990fx board.

i was going to oc my 965be to 3.9ghz (my 990 board died and if i cant rma it i was going to get a cheaper 970 board)

Poor board I lost an Asus z77 sabertooth due to dual power surges in a row. I know the asus 990fx evo has gotten to around 4.5-4.6ghz on  a 8350, but no one really tests these things with the 965be.

Main difference is that 990FX has crossfire and Sli support and a higher Hyper Transport frequency. 970 just crossfire

Like the others said it's about Crossfire, 990fx can run at x16/x16 and the 970 board can only run at x16/x4. Also 970 generally have less power phases. That's why i would recommend the Asus M5a97 Evo if you're going for a 970 board, it has 6+2 power phases. You can get very good overclock with it and if you're not going crossfire it's the way to go

Yeah I have to agree the M5A97 evo is pretty much the best 970 chipset board for overclocking

Well 990FX has more options (better OC) and you can put more graphics cards into it.....that`s about it.....and yeah mobo makers always put more shiny/flashy things on flagship motherboard (things you never gonna use :P) !

990 allows sli and 970 only allows crossfire, this isnt a big deal but if your planing to do a duel gpu set up it might affect your choice
