looks good but it can only export video at 720p.

Blender might work... It's made for 3D Modelling and Animation, but it has a video editing mode too. Other than that, the best thing I can say is getting a Virtual Machine setup for Linux to run Kdenlive, or the official KdenLive-VirtualBox-image. Windows lacks good video editors, where the Linux platforms have much better alternatives to high-end video editors.

What software/tutorial would you recommend to set up a virtual machine? could I dualboot to use linux on my pc?

You can definitely Dual-Boot! In fact it would be the better option. There is a Program/Software/Extra-OS called WUBI, that allows you to select either Windows or Ubuntu from startup. When you no longer desire to have it, you can just uninstall it through the Windows Uninstaller and everything would be back to normal. This is a much simpler way to dual-boot and I would definitely recommend it for both newbies and more experienced Techies that just want to get the best of both worlds.

I can't really recommend a tutorial for VirtualBox, since I've always found it rather simple, but judging from views and likes, these seem alright:

It looks like windows 8.1 is not supported.

"Thus at this point Wubi would not work on a new Windows 8 machine."

I used Lightworks for a while. Also Davinci Resolve Lite is an ok editor. Not 100% easy to use (expect a steep learning curve for both named softwares) but works great even though its not the thing its meant to do. I switched to Sony Vegas a while back though.

I will definetly look into it.

Hi,

Try Avidemux and Windows Movie Maker..

Windows Movie Maker is a bit too basic for me but I will certainly take a look at Avidemux.

It works fine on my Windows 8.1 Laptop that I use for school. There are alternative ways to dual-boot, though.

Windows lacks good video editors probably because no one can compete with Premiere Pro. It's best at what it does, and it's industry standard.

I couldn't agree more!

Yet it still surprises me that open-source hasn't made a proper response to Premiere the way they have to 3DS/Maya/Zbrush/C4D with Blender or the way they did to Photoshop with GIMP/Paint.net.

I am looking for good free video editing software. I use the avchd codec and windows 8.1.

Feel free to leave any suggestions.

Oh, I forgot to mention that incase it won't work for you for some reason, you could try Jashaka.

I don't like it that much myself, but Jashaka and Lightworks are really the only free editing software I can point a Windows user to.
