Hi! I just got optical fibre internet in my home.

Messing around and searching in Google I found the admin password for my router, and now I have access to a lot more stuff.

One of them is the WAN configuration, now I can configure more stuff, also the "Enable NAT" option.

I can disable it, but I don't know if that's a good idea.

My ISP asks for like $6 more for a static IP, I don't know if that involves getting you out of the NAT.

I just want to be able to host GMod stuff with friends. I don't want to set the world on fire or host some North Korean content.

Should I try or some alarm is going to sound when I disable it in the ISP headquarters and then they come to my house to slap my with a tomato?

Thanks :D

Nat should be enabled and you then just forward ports.  Your ISP wont mind if you enable NAT and a stick IP will not effect how NAT works.

What part doesnt work?

So I should leave it on?

The "WAN IP" in the router is completely different to the one that shows if I look for "What's my IP" in google (my "public" IP)

being behind a NAT is fine, generally you'd only have gaming issues if you are behind a 'double nat' (behind two nat routers). One nat router should be fine and allow for an open or moderate nat type, unless your router has a weird nat type. If the router has UPnP (universal plug n play) enabled by default, then you shouldn't need to port forward either, but in some cases routers either have upnp disabled by default, or have buggy upnp, in which case you may need to manually forward some ports.

a static ip doesn't really have anything to do with nat, you'd still want nat enabled unless you had your own block of static IP's... Your ISP only gives you one public IP address, if you were to disable nat on your router you'd be stuck with only one device being able to get online, or may not be able to get online at all.

leave nat enabled.

Here is a short version of what it does:

since IP address is composed of a set of numbers, there is only so many unique IPs to go around, and we are running out of free IPs. NAT is the solution to let you duplicate IP in your home network by dynamically create port forward.

If you want to disable NAT, you'll need to buy a static IP for each of your system, and I'm not sure if your ISP will even allow it.
