Basically my girlfriends laptop has been running extremely slow lately and I cannot figure out why. the laptop isn't a gaming laptop but it still wasn't a cheap laptop (around 700$) and it shouldn't be running like it is because it is only a year old.

Here are the specs I can remember from memory

Core: i5 quad core 2450m (I THINK)

HD: 750gb

RaM: 6gb

Cant remember the exact model of I5 but its a 2nd gen one

The main thing you notice it slows down in is when you try and open programs and even when she trys to play minecraft even with the render distance etc... all the way down she still only is getting around 17 fps and when she bought the laptop she could run mid settings at like 30 fps.

I have tried everything I know on how to fix it I uninstalled a ton of applications and scanned the entire computer with Norton, updated the drivers etc... none of that worked, next I tried restoring the computer to its factory settings so that everything was simply gone off it and it still runs slower than hell. Not much later I noticed when you shutdown the computer it makes an odd grinding noise, thinking this was the HD I took the back off the computer and inspected the HD to discover it was some shitty Hitachi HD however something else I thought of is I believe the noise came from the right side of the laptop and the HD was on the left (I think) anyways so now I just think she needs a new HD but im not really sure... Any ideas are welcome. Thanks.

Also I just gave her the laptop back for now until I decide what to do.

The cpu could be deteriorating from overuse

She doesn't even use it that often that's the thing.

Could be something jammed in the fan causing the CPU to overheat and under clock itself

This or there is a lot of dust, check the temperatures when IDLE and during playing a game. If its really hot (60 degrees or higher) consider cleaning it.

I normally aim problems like this to the hard drive, i had  an old laptop(2-3 years ago) and it would run minecraft back in alpha when i brought it fine, also played youtube ok as well. The laptop slowly got worse, minecraft wouldnt play at all, it would not play youtube well. Changed the hard drive which was 256gb to a 750gb one and it got its speed back. Sadly later I was using it in a car and we had a crash and it when straight out the windows and was never found again.

Well im sorry, i never knew that upgrading a laptop would somehow bend the equilibrium of someones mind so that they crash and the added weight the new hard drive is used againest it making the laptop fall faster and render a higher amount of the damage onto its self. All we can do is fire slick.

Get rid of Norton. It's one of the biggest CPU hogs ever. Get something like AVG or Avast.
