Sony NEX-5R Problems

My mom purchased her Sony NEX-5R digital camera less than 2 years ago, and on Christmas day she was disappointed to find that it would power on, the shutter would click a few times at different speeds, then the screen would come on saying "Camera error. Turn power off then on." Doing so only repeats the process. Does anyone with some camera experience know what could be causing the issue, and what can be done to resolve it? I use this camera a lot too, and its a shame to see it like this.
