Matlab is a trivially easy language to pick up assuming you are already familiar with the concept of programming. It does have many advanced features that will save you loads of time compared to other languages. In terms of what to learn, most computing tutorials are universally applicable to all languages, such as making calculators, and tasks of that kind. Familiarize yourself with the syntax using the help function and try solving some basic problems.

Edit: Another thing that I found helpful was downloading numerous codes and trying to understand what it was they were trying to do.

what style of course are you on, in my engineering course we use Matlab to calculate complex equations, crunch data, create simulink models of aircraft systems. its all quite easy to learn the basics. and once you understand the basics its not difficult to solve anything, you just have to thing of how your going to do something, eg think how you would do it if you had to do it by hand and you can replicate a lot in matlab.

Yeah that's my experience as well.  The syntax and all that is pretty straight forward.  Doing things like fourier analysis and other data analysis can get pretty complex, but understanding the math principles makes it easier to handle.
