Or cl_showfps 1 for a more basic counter

How do you see the fps you re getting in games what program do you use?

All Source games have a built in one "cl_showfps 1", BF4 has one "perfoverlay.drawfps 1" otherwise, you could use Fraps.

Some people have reported cl_showfps 1 as lowering their frame rate, can't say for myself though

Okay so how do you do this for battlefield?

For BF4 you use command "perfoverlay.drawfps 1" (no case sensitive). It only shows current fps since average is counted within timeframe. For that you'd need Fraps. If current is what you are looking for, you can automate it by placing text file named user.cfg in Program Files folder where game is. Insert all console commands you want to use there, each on separed line. For BF3 command for fps is "Render.DrawFps 1" (same as for all previous BF games).
