The website i use recommends 650watt minimum. You can also use the calculator on it to estimate your system load.

650 as rated by AMD. You'll never pull that much under actual system load. 550W will be the highest you'll see, but only about 500 under standard heavy load.

As long as the PSU has 2x 8-pin (6+2) connectors, it should run an R9 290X without any issues.

Your PSU might get loud under heavy load, as that system would probably push around 350W while gaming.

I doubt it would be anywhere near that much, honestly. Motherboards rarely consume a significant amount of power... power draw sites estimate 125W for an 8350 and 70W for a motherboard, but generally both together consume around 125-150. R9 290/290X usually consumes around 225W on its own. Likely to be under 400W even under heavy load.

AnandTech's review of the 290X playing Cyrsis 3 on Uber mode was 405W total system draw at the wall, with a 4960X overclocked. So I'm pretty sure in terms of the actual power demands from the PSU, it would be around 325-350W for heavy load (and then probably around 400-475W at the wall, depending if he overclocked).

Its just handy to have a list and calculator all in one place. Leaving a bit of head room gives you overclocking space and space to add it more components at a later date.

I've seen from different reviewers that under load a 280X system can pull from as little as 370 to as high as 482W. Best to stick with 500W under stress testing load just to be safe, which the CX600 will do, but I wouldn't want to personally pull >80% the rated wattage froma CX for an extended period of time

Fair enough. Which reviews are these from? I'd like to take a look at their test setups and see if I can figure out the reason for the discrepancy
