I've always been curious about Linux, but I've only a had laptops in the past which obviously were restrictive. Now that i've finally built my desktop, I can do with it as I please.

I currently have Windows 8.1, all the drivers, (mostly) are installed and I've stress tested, and everything is A-Okay. As of right now Ubuntu is being downloaded and I'm prepared to mount the OS on a usb bootable drive. It's a 32Gb. My concerns are of the drivers, and the navigation, and how the computer deals with the other HDD while Linux is loaded. Also my 4790k is currently overclocked to 4.8Ghz, 1.315 V, but I'll definitely be setting it back to default while attempting this.

What do I do when I first turn it on? Anything else I should worry about that I haven't thought of?

I really enjoy experimenting with things like this, but only if I'm certain I won't damage anything, and so far it looks like there's nothing that can go wrong, unless someone has something else I should be worried about. I'll be updating with progress, and thoughts in the next 20 minutes as soon as it's finished downloading.

Oh and when my second HDD arrive in the mail, I will also be attempting to install hackintosh.

when you first start up, look near the bottom of the screen for what button on the keyboard to hit for boot options. hit that button, anda place where you can select your drives should come up. hit enter on your usb. linux boots up and your drive is untooched

So I don't have to re install anything? Everything can be accessed from my HDD, and I can just use the USB as a boot drive, is that right?

If it's that easy, then I might think about getting 2 or 3 PCI SSDs and use those to boot my OSs from!

the linux will run on the 32 gb usb drive. if you want to install to your hard, ubuntu has an option to create a partition and both will work

I booted up from the drive, and it took me to a screen, I chose to install linux, however, it wouldn't let me install to the usb, it was only able to recognize  my 1TB HDD, which I do not want to partition, so I backed out, and now I'm currently in what I believe to be the "try ubuntu without installing it" mode. It does not recognize my HDD though, not sure what to do now. However, I do like it so far, seems to be mimicking Mac os more than anything.

of couse it seems like its mimicking mac os. both are made off the FreeBSD, both linux and mac os. they ae internally i dentical. the only difference being the GUI

Okay, but what about my problem? I can't install to the usb, and I can't access my 1TB HDD, it says it's unable to mount, i'm going to try to restart first.
