970, Radeon equivalent?

Had sort of settled on getting the 970 (specifically the Strix version[well toss up between that and the G1 gaming]).  However have heard lots today about it having memory 'problems' which will probably result in a firmware update if not a recall. So may well have to get Radeon card what would the panel consider equivalent to the 970 both in power and cost.  Quietness is of the utmost importance so performance can be lowered a LITTLE [1] for quietness .

 

If Nvidia get the problem sorted soon and backdate it,or they just have to update the drivers, all will be hunky-dory as I am not getting the card for another eight days.

 

 

[1] Made up numbers, but if one produced 60 fps and another half as loud produced 59 then the 59fps one would win.

R9 280x

Not even close

 

The R9 290 is the closest IMO

Yeah R9 290 IMO. But the 290x is only like $10-30 more on Newegg (US)

290 really, but its amd top offering and is less money, but that is because amd have dropped in price and are hinting at a new release

the original mid- high tier card was the 280x

The R9 290 is the real competitor, however you can find an R9 290x for cheaper than a 970 and it will be faster. The R9 290 can currently be had for 240$ at newegg, at that price the 970 hardly makes any sense if you ask me.
