Okay so I'm looking to get a new GPU to upgrade from my slightly old gtx 260. I was looking at an entirely new build as my current one is about 5 years old. I was going to base it on an i5-4670k. Would it be better to get a 7970 or a 770 in this build. I don't expect to do any 1440p gaming but I might add a second 1080p monitor down the road. What do you guys think?

7970, since you can get them for $329 and they are neck and neck in performance, with the 7970 you get 4 free games and an extra gig of vram which will help if your upgrade cycles are longer due to games increasingly using more vram, even at 1080p and it will perform better if you eventually do eyefinity.

The 7970 is now significantly cheaper at 330$, I can't see any scenario where I would recommend the 770 over the 7970 considering the performance is pretty much neck & neck when both are overclocked + the free games + more memory + the lower price.

Thanks for all your help I've just always been an nvidia fan boy so this is hard for me to accept. Haha. What 7970 card should I go with?

Either the Sapphire 7970 Dual-X or the 7970 Ghz Vapor-X which has a slightly higher clock & a better cooler + a very cool looking led lit Sapphire logo.

Yeah I would go with the others and go with the 7970. all those games are still amazing me. Only reason I would go 770 is if I had the games and really wanted the soon to be shadowplay.

I generally like the gigabyte windforce cards. I've seen a lot of awesome stuff about the sapphire ones as well recently

And does a more expensive card always mean more performance? would a $330 card perform as well as a $400? and what about GHz edition?

Higher price doesn't generally mean more performance, 7950 for example is significantly faster than the 660 Ti & was priced similarly for a very long time.

The Ghz Edition uses the Tahiti XT 2.0 GPU, a higher binned version of the Tahiti XT chip used in the 7970, this means it can be clocked higher.

Thanks for your help everyone. The combination of price, equal performance and games has me set on the 7970. What are you guys running card wise?

I've actually ordered a 7950 two weeks ago, I sold it to a friend yesterday & just ordered a 7970 from amazon XD .

Had a 4870 before the 7950, the 4870 is pretty much equivalent to the 260, the performance improvement is nothing short of phenomenal !

I can't wait. Will an intel QX9770X be a bottleneck to a 7970? I was just wondering in case I can't build a whole new system now and just wanted a better gpu

If it's a GPU intensive game like BF3 or Far Cry 3, then no, if it's a CPU intensive game like Starcraft 2 or Skyrim then yes.
