Hello every one,

I am planning to build myself a little home server, it is going to be used for storage for movies and shows. I am going to use Air video HD to stream the content to apple TVs or iPads, my plan is to run vmware esxi and then virtualize a windows client, I want to virtualize it because then I can add new clients If needed and for fun.

My current build plan is:

Budget

cheapest possible

The budget is around 7000 NOK (around 920 US Dollars), that is about what my current build costs now.

My location is Norway as you may see from the currency, so it will be a bit difficult to link prices because the prices will be very different at the stores avaiebel to me.

So what I’m I looking for if not price recommendation?

Well I need help whit the parts, is my current build a good one? Any other suggestions? Won’t this build work for my intended use?

Regards

Vanon

Can't bother make you a pcpartpicker build but I'd recommend an Intel i3 or a G3258 on a mATX motherboard with 6 SATA3 6Gbps ports, with whatever drives you want in a Fractal Design Node 804 with some efficient 450W PSU.

CPU: Intel i5 4570 | Cooler: Cooler Master TPC 812 | Motherboard: ASUS H87M-PRO | RAM: G.Skill 16GB (4x4GB) @ 1600MHZ | Storage: OCZ ARC 100 480GB, WD Caviar Black 2TB, Caviar Blue 1TB | GPU: Gigabyte GTX 970 | ODD: ASUS BC-12D2HT BR Reader | PSU: Cooler Master V650 | Display: LG IPS234 | Keyboard: Logitech G710+ | Mouse: Logitech G602 | Audio: Logitech Z506 & Audio Technica M50X | My machine: https://nz.pcpartpicker.com/b/JoJ

I will be using vmware esxi 5.5 at the bottom and then virtualize a Windows 8.1 client. The reason why not to just install Windows 8.1 as the core OS is that I want the possibility to install some linuxs clients when I feel like experimenting. But this type of experiment is not the main focus for the build.

The main focus is storage and streaming media to Apple TVs whit Air Video HD.

On a Norwegian forum I was recommended to use ECC memory, but do I realy need it?

If not I have been trying to make a cheaper build:

+ WD Red 3TB HDD
