So I have an htc one m8 and this morning the one thing that is not allowed to happen happened. I dropped it in the toilet (EW) and i need to clean it and save it from the water of course. When I fished it out immediately it was still powered on but my screen had difficulty registering my touches. After I dried it off i managed to, through a few repeated touches turn it off. it was turned off within 20-25 seconds of getting wet so I don't think it took any substantial damage. My planned approach was to fill a little container with alcohol (97%) and then soak the phone in there pretty good to disinfect it. Thereafter i would either leave it out to dry for a day or two or dump it in a rice bag, would this be safe? My biggest worry is whether the camera and the screen will take damage from it. Also it will probably dissolve the glue for my screen protector but oh well...

A friend of mine spilt tea over his... It was dead for about a week then it turned on and it was pretty much not responsive, then a month later it was working perfectly but he couldn't touch some parts of the screen, 3 months later its fully functional again.

Just keep drying it.

I can't get your latest two links to work :/ I decided to soak it in some 99% isopropyl which I found somewhere far hidden away which is designed for not being conductive so I guess it isn't. I soaked my phone in it and will leave it on the radiator for 5-6 hours and then I'll ricebag it till tomorrow morning and try turning it on. Thank you for all your comments everyone, I'll let you know how it turns out :-)

125ml for 12$ sure.   wanna try to submerge a phone in that?  Also I said as in general most rubbing/cleaning alcohol is conductive, it's better to not suggest people to use anything that might not work.

Take it easy, ladies.  If you want to get into a catfight, do it via PM.

Back on topic : Distilled water isn't conductive.  You may be better off using that.  Get a large syringe and force the water into the phone via the 3.5mm jack or the micro-USB port.

Once you feel that the inside is clean enough , go through the usual "rice + slight heat" routine.  Make sure the phone doesn't get too hot though, as the battery will suffer from temps above 50°C.

If there wasn't any waste in the toilet it is probably cleaner than your kitchen counter. (If you wash it regularly of course)
