Using two DP + one HDMI?

Hey everyone,

 

So I've got two Dell u2414h's, and had issue with the colour of one, so to test if the cable was faulty (both were connected by DP - mini-DP cable to my Gigabyte G1 GTX 970) I plugged one monitor into a HDMI cable, and plugged that cable into the port. The moment I plug the HDMI cable into my GPU the other screen (which only a DP cable is connected to) goes into sleep mode. I then tried this with a DVI-HDMI cable, and same again, the second screen (which is actually the primary monitor) goes black.

 

Why is this happening? Can I not use 2 DP + 1 HDMI simultaneously? When I get a third u2414h will I be able to connect it by DP as well and work that fine? (I have 3 DP on my GPU)
