windows 7 search engine

I used to store all my personal stuff on my desktop, music included... and I dont use music libraries or anything, I just have a huge bulk in folders organized to my preference... whenever I want to listen to something, I just press start and type the song name, bam its there... as well as other files

 

I decided to move my files from the desktop to the C: drive directory, I made shortcuts for those folders and put them on my desktop... 

 

fair enough, the damn thing stopped giving me search results for anything (I'm on a ssd) ...

 

friend uses a 60gb ssd OS drive and a hard drive so all the media is on the hard drive... same thing, amazing search results...

 

can I do something here, or is this just a dead engine, and I should put the folders back in the desktop folder to resolve this BS?

 

how does windows 8 search compare?
