So, my dad brought home a hp laptop from work and its locked to an old employee that used to use it, I was wondering is there a way to get around this password or do i have to just reinstall the os... I would prefer not to wipe it as there is important docs on the laptop :)

Any help would be awesome

You can as long as it's not encrypted.
I use

http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

You can activate admin account and strip/change its password.

You can even remove that existing account's password, though you'll run into issues if it's linked to an MS account and not on a local login.

I found this: http://www.howtogeek.com/96630/how-to-reset-your-forgotten-windows-password-the-easy-way/

Give it a try, I hope you have an install disc.

You can do it with a Ubuntu Live DVD http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/14369/change-or-reset-windows-password-from-a-ubuntu-live-cd/

LTT's unofficial Windows activation expert.

that's been patched. It won't let you run that command without permission.
