So I have a slight issue with my computer at the moment that is a bit concerning and figured I could come here to ask for some advice. I've had quite a few problems with this computer and the problem has usually been a failure to boot or access anything. I tend to resolve the issue with resetting the CMOS with a jumper on the pins on the motherboard and that seems to fix it. However, now it seems I have a different problem. My computer boots perfectly fine to windows, however it does take a little bit longer than usual to get to the motherboard badge screen before booting into windows. I just ignored it and figured it was fine since the operating system itself is functional. Decided to check if I could boot into the BIOS at all and as it turns out I can't. I can press the delete key to enter the bios however, when I get there my screen seems to be corrupt. It doesn't fit to the resolution of my monitor anymore and it doesn't have any UI it seems. It's just the outline of the bios with blackness filling where there would be a menu system and buttons. I'm not quite sure what to do to fix this situation so any help would be appreciated.

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

CPU: AMD FX-8350 Vishera @ 4.0GHz

RAM: 8GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 1600MHz

Motherboard: MSI 970A-G43

Graphics: 2GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 760

the BIOS may seem to be failing

but before you do anything else

replace the button battery on the mobo

it that shiny round thing on the board

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Funny you should mention that as I had to do that a month prior. Before my computer wouldn't boot at all until i replaced it a month back. I'm wondering if I should try updating the BIOS to see if that would fix it but I'm not quite sure if that would help or not.

yea since you are left with not much option

try to see if you can update the BIOS

otherwise time for a new CPU and mobo

or newer 990FX mobo for your CPU

Is there anything I should do prior to attempting to update the BIOS? I seem to remember updating it a while back (before I reinstalled everything) and having some issues booting. Also should I just use the MSI Live Update Utility? (Just trying to be safe)

yea i used Live Update before its ok

just dont have other programs running and do not touch the PC or shut it off when the BIOS is updating

Well...it appears its not that simple. I tried rebooting any scanning again yet got the same result. Perhaps it is time to get a better motherboard? If you have any other suggestions I'd be happy to try them.2daahpx.jpg

this board should do the trick

with the 990FX

you can push your FX8350 up to 5GHz with a decent cooling solution

but if you want to go Intel

pretty much i5 4690K + Z97 board

I ran it as Admin this time and got a different result, however no updates for the BIOS appeared. Tried a manual scan as well:9i8eub.jpg

Is there a way to force a new BIOS install?

Found the board on the MSI website and was wondering if I should give the driver there a shot? Says to use the flash utility that comes in the zip with the BIOS to avoid an update failure.

http://us.msi.com/support/mb/970AG43.html#down-bios

you can try that just follow the instructions correctly

It appears that the driver's application doesn't work on my system and it didn't seem to have a flashing program either. Should I try using the A30 file from the zip to do this? http://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user/support/TechFAQdetail.aspx?formid=3046

yes

Would you happen to have any advice on this topic? I was searching and couldn't seem to find a good tutorial on the subject of how to flash your bios. I've seen multiple different ways and I'm not quite sure what I'm doing. I've got the correct BIOS from the website. I've seen some you had to install DOS on the flash drive and then after that the instructions were unclear.

As a quick recap I am unable to access the bios during the boot only through windows itself in the Click Bios application.

seem like the BIOS is really broken

and flashing is not an option

guess you are better off with a new CPU and Mobo

Whats wrong with my cpu? Its just the bios that isn't working not the whole computer. My situation is that I can't access the bios to flash it there. I need to do it manually and can't find any good tutorials on the subject. I still do have an option in the windows Click Bios to use a BIOS boot option. I'm just not quite sure how to use it.

There's an update tool made by MSI users running around.

It creates a bootable thumdrive that takes care of the update by itself. you could give it a try I guess, but I don't know if you can select a boot drive to begin with,
if that were a problem, maybe uninstalling the hard drive would force the thumdrive to boot?

Would you happen to know the name of the tool and where I could get it? USB is the first boot drive for me and when USB isn't an option it just boots into Windows.
