Grounding with PSU

Go to solution Solved by notenoughtv,

It shouldn't matter whether if it is on or off. All you need is the ground, and you can't turn that off.

Just one little thing that has me confused...so Linus says that a  way to ground yourself when building a PC is to connect the PSU to the wall socket with the PSU switched off. That's all fine and good. But what about at the wall socket itself? Does it need to be switched on or off?

Good question. I'm not sure about Canada, but in USA it's pretty uncommon for outlets to have on/off switches. We have 2 in our house like that and are more for lamps with light switches away from the outlet that turn them on or off. I've seen other countries where they individual plugs have switches, but never here.

I have a power bar that connects to my psu and I switch on the power bar but switch off the power supply in order to ground myself.

Yeah over here in Australia all outlets have on and off switches, which is why it was a little unclear to me hence why i needed to ask for clarification before i leap into the building the PC not knowing i'm not actually not grounded.

I have a power bar that connects to my psu and I switch on the power bar but switch off the power supply in order to ground myself.

So i'm assuming by "power bar" you mean something like a surge protector that converts one socket into like 5 or 6? If that's the case that sounds to me like its the same as having the wall socket switched on.

Makes sense guess i'll just have it switched off at the wall socket as well. Thanks  :)
