Mobile cpu buying issue

Go to solution Solved by D2ultima,

hey guys I'm new here I would like some help plz

I need a laptop for collage this year I'm going to be using Ableton live; pro tools and some light work work with photo shop and I'm gonna be happy with an i3. but will the cpu be able to Handel the work load or do I need a cpu with turbo boost

All mobile CPUs from intel have turbo boost. I was corrected; i5s and i7s only have turbo. All the core i series have HT though.

That being said, I don't know what Ableton live is. If you feel you need a quadcore, then you need an i7. If you feel a dual core is fine, then an i3 or an i5 would work. There are no quadcore laptop CPUs from intel that do NOT have hyperthreading. You only get dual core + HT (i3, i5, ULV) or quad core + HT (i7)

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

its a music producing program. depending on how crazy you go with amount of instruments and effects it can be quite cpu intensive (certainly for laptops). i don't know how it scales with amount of cores tho

well laptop chips are basically desktop chips performance-wise, as long as you use the same configs. An i7-4900MQ at 4GHz will perform like an i7-4790K at 4GHz, for example. So that's not a problem (for performance chips). For ULV chips it's a different story. If he wants to see what performance is like, he can find the max dual-core turbo of an i3 or an i5 for a laptop, then compare it to a desktop i3 that has similar speeds, then look for benchmarks in the program he wants. That's likely the best way to do it.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

That is false, only i5 and i7 have turbo boost. All the rest of them DON'T have Turbo Boost.

*checks* you're right, I'm very sorry for having false information. Could have sworn they did.
