As a first time builder, I have just realized I've made a stupid mistake. I put together my PC on PCPartPicker, and it said it would consume 330W of power, so I decided to purchase a CX 430W. However, now that I'm building my computer, I realized it was a mistake. I have a GTX 970, and it takes 2 6-pin connectors. However, the power supply only has one 6/8-pin cable. I thought I'd try the molex adaptor, but the system won't even boot when I have the GPU installed. Can you guys explain to me how I use the adaptor? Is it possible that I've damaged the GPU?

my brothers rig has a 2 molex to 6 pin adapter, and works fine. Make sure everything is plugged in completly, and the system shouldnt be pulling over 430 watts at idle, I dont think there is any risk of it being damaged. is it not starting, or just not showing a image?

If I remove the GPU, it boots. If I insert it, it tries to, and immediately stops. The CPU fan spins for a second, then stops. The cable that came with the CX 430W has 3 molex plugs and a thin one that I don't even know what is for. How do I plug everything in?

If your computer turns on without it plugged in, probably need a better power supply. If it turns on plugged in without a display, maybe dead or not getting sufficient power. I have 750 watts for a build I know for a fact will pull like 500 watts.

Factually speaking, a 430W is enough.

Do you know how the cables are supposed to be set up? Is there a way to debug this and know what the problem is?

I mean it should be self explanatory. 2 molex from your psu into an adapter for a 6pin out.

Edit what's your processor

Can't factually say anything without knowing CPU, or other peripherals.

4790k, only a single 840 EVO SSD. Does someone know how the cables should be configured?

The cable that comes with the power supply has 3 molex plugs, and the 970 adapter has two. Does it matter which one I plug in?

It shouldn't matter but no reason not to play around with them. (Unless you might have done something to possibly short it out in that case should return it anyway.)

Underpowering it won't damage it unless done extremely excessively.

Is it possible that it has killed the GPU simply by pugging it in incorrectly?

EDIT: It booted up! Thanks for the help! God, I thought I might had damaged something!

From a "factual" standpoint your computer should be able to boot up. However I highly recommend buying a better power supply anyway because there probably isn't much headroom. I have experience high usage shutdowns with 450 watts

There really isn't a way to plug it in incorrectly. At least in power supply cables since there's nothing to bend. Are those molex cables bent? That's the only thing that may be damaged unless something was doa. You may have damaged something depending on how long you spent trying to get this to work. (Talking 4+ hours of constant spamming power button)
