Why does my display driver crash?

I have an overclocked 980, and it runs fine when stressed by AIDA 64 but can crash randomly when playing games. When i revert to stock settings after the crash, the same thing happens. This is due to the display driver. What should i do? All Nvidia drivers are up to date BTW. Should i lower the voltage or do something else?

Here is my overclock if that helps:

Did you by any chance have an AMD card before your 980 on this very system?

Don't run in safe mode (not needed), select AMD drivers and choose "Clean and restart" then see if the crashing persists

What @Archangel1994 says. If that doesn't help see if you notice the problem while running furmark.

Thanks bro, it did delete some AMD stuff, now my computer has restarted and Nvidia drivers are intact

I ran it through unigine and it worked fine

This used to happen with my laptop's GT525M. It wasn't even overclocked, but by reducing clock speed from 600 (default) to 500 MHz, it stopped crashing.

It's an almost 4 year old laptop with heavy daily use though, so I'm not sure if that applies to your shiny 980.
