I just got my Raspberry Pi B+ and I'm wondering how I'm going to sucessfully play movies/TV shows on my TV with it. Here's my setup:

I have a 3TB NAS that has hundreds of movies and TV shows, but I'm not entirely interested in using XBMC, since I've used it in the past and didn't really like the way it structured my movies and TV shows.

What I currently do, is just find the file on the NAS and open it with VLC Media player, which always plays at the highest quality and never skips a beat.

My question is, is there a way I can play videos off my NAS onto my Raspberry Pi? I've had a little experience in the past with network shares on a linux distro and it was kind of a pain to set up, so I'm hoping theres a distro out there that will allow me to do this without slapping me in the face with all their custom nonsense.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or will I be stuck using something like XBMC?

well you could set up a plex server on your nas then you can access everything from your raspberrypi.

This. Get Plex Media Server on your NAS, then get RasPlex for your Pi. Depending on the size of your libraries, it can be a bit cumbersome to navigate, music in particular; but it's super easy to set up and it works very well.
