Installing Linux on PS3

Hi there. I hope that i've posted this in the right section. I don't think this post would work out well in the console forum section, as i would imagine it's viewers wouldn't have done something like this.

I would like to turn my PS3 into a linux box. It's a fat PS3 running firmware 4.66. I've looked online for solutions. The most promising seems to involved downgrading to version 3.15, but doing this from 4.66 doesn't seem possible.

A friend suggested removing the hard drive, and formatting it with my PC, putting Linux on it (ubuntu) and then putting it back in the PS3.

I wasn't entirely sure that this would work. I didn't find any useful results after a search on google for this, so i'm putting the question to the knowledgeable people here in the LTT forum - will it work?

thanks

You're out of luck, when you reinstall the hard drive the ps3 system will itself format it to make sure you don't pirate.

Ah, i figured sony would do something like that...

It's a shame, i spent 700 bucks on this PS3 (AUD, at release), and it's going to just collect dust now.

thanks for your help though, i'll mark your post as the answer.

and that is why I sold my console. Since I got a proper PC, I haven't used it in month.

Don't worry, i'm PCMR. The PS3 is just for some exclusives.
