how do you make a mouse?

Go to solution Solved by woll3,

The aim of the idea was to get an ergonomic shape. Hollow areas could be filled in with more liquid plastic to give the mouse weight and strength, and more detailed areas, like screw holes and actuators could be cut out of sheet plastic or molded. I really don't think it would be that difficult and you could come up with a pretty nice looking mouse, if done right.

Thing is that you have to do a mold for each piece of the shell, otherwise it wont work,  also they would be rather hard to make as the bosses have to be an integral part of the lower shell or base plate, actuators would actually work easily, but if it is worth the effort for him than why not.

I've got Prescott sheet metal company near me house.... :)

Well, it seems like they are offering manufacturing services, which could dtake the hardest part(Base plate, lower shell) from you.

I know how to cut it out and everything, but I can't think of a design that I can use

As in? You have to get to the drawing board and do it yourself, i would suggest making a 5 piece shell design, buttons and side pieces made in the way mdnorman38 suggested, base plate and palm plate out of Aluminium.

so, I have this mouse from logitech. the case is all broken and stuff, so i was wondering if i could take out all the electronics and stuff, i could build a new case for it based off of " coughs uuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhmmmmmmmm" Linus Media Group. The mouse is a simple laser mouse with left and right click, the scroll wheel, and a on/off button. Anyone have any suggestions on the design< Im coming up empty.

Thanks guys,

Bajantechnician

P.S. LMG, YOU GUYS R DUH BEST!!! :)

post picks of the case, if we know how damaged t is we might be able to re use parts, also could you just get a refund or a replacement?

also do you have access to a laser cutter

ive got a dremel, its reusable, but the internal plastic is not. no refund or replacemrnt. No proof of purchase. and no laser cutter.

id start with basic functionality, eg make a base plate that all the mouse components sit on. then figure out a way to make a top cover, maybe go for a box design and have big chunky square buttons. maybe some small springs to return them.

In all honesty, its not worth the hassle in any way, especially if you have no access to the right machinery.

maybe some small springs to return them.

There would be no need for that as this is done by the "power" of the switches alone.

if hes makking it him self they might be too heavy :P and lead to a really sensitive mouse or just inaccurate clicking

I want to make something like this, but I dont like the design

and i want something that looks like this

The broken mouse is also wireless, so yeah....

make a foam mold, cover in thin layer of plaster of paris, paint a few times with paint, maybe a gloss layer as well or matte, remove foam and refine shape with dremel. you are know the only person in the world with a plaster mouse (most likely)

note do not touch plaster of paris with your bare skin till its cool, it will give you serious burns

My recommendation. Otherwise the coolest thing would be making it in a 3d printer.

Main PC:

ASUS F1A55-M LX, AMD A6-3500, (2x2)gb Kingston HyperX Blu DDR3 1600mhz, Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7200rpm,
Corsair CX430M, Cooler Master Elite 343, Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

Netbook:

Lenovo Ideapad S10-2, Intel Atom N280, (1x1)gb DDR2 667mhz, WD Scorpio Blue 250gb 5400rpm, Zorin OS 9 Lite

I dont want to be a killjoy but i simply have to. A Layout like this Ergomouse isnt possible, the question is, are the internals of your broken mouse even dual-pcb? If not such a Vertical Design is impossible anyway.

Another Option is to expand the Budget by like 15,000$ and get a Factory or Designstudio to do it for you.

lel, heres a pic of where the mouse is jacked up.

WHERE DO I ATTACH PICS ? :)

plaster would probably make it too heavy

The thing is that making a functional shell isnt that easy, especially if you want to make it with "gaming design", these kind of shell´s are only possible to manufacture because they are made via injection.

But if you really want to go through with that i would first look if you have any other means to "produce" near you. If anything i would rather take would than Styrofoam, it works in the case you have linked because it is basically just a fat blob with two actuators for the switches sticking outside, the mouse would also get really fat as the walls would have to be pretty thick, battery change cant be done as well as you would have to glue everything together instead of using screws, only other option would be an Interference fit, but imo you should just forget the styrofoam.

And i have to repeat myself to say it is not worth the hassle simply because the internals arent worth the effort.

I would recommend using molding clay to make a shape for the mouse that you like and is comfortable to use, then make a silicon mold of it. Once the mold has set fill it with a strong liquid plastic and once that has set you have the basic shape of the mouse. Then all you would have to do is cut out areas for the scroll wheel and the buttons, and fill it with all the components.

I personally cant see how it would be practical for something that is hollow and consists at least out of 2 pieces. Not to mention that there need to be screw bosses and actuators for the switches as well.
