Shift key not always working

Hi, on my laptop, which is fairly new i might add, both left and right shift keys seem to work intermittently meaning that sometimes they will both decide not to work and after a while they work again. it is extremely annoying and i dont think it is a hardware error but i might be wrong.

im running windows 8.1 on an acer aspire v5-473pg. 

 

any tips on how to check if its a hardware or software error cos i kind of need my laptop for school and cant afford much downtime. im hopefully trying not to send it in if possible for that reason, but if it is a hardware error then i wont have a choice.
