r9 290 vs 280x

Go to solution Solved by Aniallation,

Well, the question is idk which one to get. I want all dat vram but if price to preformance is better on the 280 then I'd rather go with that.

Halp pls

Honestly whether or not the price is worth it or not is up to you. Don't compare with 280X, compare to 280, because they are similar cards with very similar price for a non-linear price difference. The 290 is about on-point in terms of price-to-performance to the 280, it just depends if you really need the extra power. At 1080p 60Hz a 280 is definitely plenty, but for higher refresh rate or resolutions, stepping up to the 290 is recommended.

The R9 290 is better for price to performance. You're talking 20-30% more FPS for 25% higher cost. This kind of linear speedup with price is pretty rare at the high end. And the extra 1GB of VRAM is the cherry on top that makes it an even more clear winner.

And really, this benchmark above undersells the R9 290, because it's done with a reference card that hits 94C and has to throttle to keep within its thermal envelope. A Sapphire Tri-X has a faster core clock and keeps temps in the 70s at its stock speed (which is still an out of the box overclock vs reference) so there is no throttling.

The R9 290 is incredible price to performance, which is so rare at the high end. The Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 is available for $270 after rebate.
