Using a Phone/Tablet as navigation system.

Go to solution Solved by ZetZet,

You can use GPS without sim card. It wil lake ages to lock on the first time and if you change you location between turn ons, not tunnels though, longer distances.

Notebookcheck.net does GPS tests.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to use an Asus Zenfone 5 as a navitagion system for my car.

Assuming that i use an offline software like mapfactor to have all the maps i need already downloded,

is it possibile to use the phone for navigation, without a sim card? (no phone carrier,i'll just use wifi from time to time to update maps)

I read that the TTFF will be longer without a data plan because i will not be able to use A-GPS.

But is it only the first lock to require more time? (like the first 5 minutes before starting the travel)

Or will it take a tons of time to take a fix again after,let's say,loosing the signal for a minute due to a tunnel?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the answer and for pointing out that website ZetZet,very useful.

I decided to go for a Asus Fonepad 7 for 99 euros.

Thanks again!

EDIT:

By the way,i did an experiment with my Xperia U:

-Got a GPS lock;

-Removed the sim and shutdown the phone;

-Moved 10KM away;

-Turned on the phone (without sim);

This resulted to have a fixed GPS lock in 40 seconds.

So the results were good enough to bring me to use a phone/tablet it as a navigator.
