Hello users of LTT forum,

I would like to introduce unto you, the LTT PCMark 8 Leaderboard/Spreadsheet.  I am sure many of you are asking what the purpose of this specific benchmark is, or for what reason someone would like to document the tests of varying computers, well let me explain in the remainder of this post.

What is PCMark 8?

The following is from Futuremark.com:

PCMark 8 is the latest version in our series of industry standard PC benchmarking tools. With PCMark 8 you can test the performance of all types of PC, from tablets to desktops. With five separate benchmark tests plus battery life testing, PCMark 8 helps you find the devices that offer the perfect combination of efficiency and performance. PCMark 8 is the complete PC benchmark for home and business.

Why should I use PCMark 8, and what's its purpose on the forum?

Obviously nobody can force you to use this benchmarking tool for any reason, but I would like to explain its purpose to myself, and the community.

Firstly, I am a college student, actively seeking a 'computer engineering' degree.  I have always been interested in the numbers of benchmarks, and the different scores achieved due to the varying hardware.  I have spent many hours researching and uncovering whatever hardware I could find.  I have built multiple systems, and am currently using the one that you can see in my signature.  The best way for me to understand and make an attempt to determine trends in hardware is to get as much experience with each system as I can.  What better resource than the entire LTT community?

To address the second part of the question, the purpose of this benchmark on the forum isn't to find out who has spent the most money on their computer (although that will be determined), but rather to create a database of computer hardware that can be accessed by anyone, at anytime.

How will scores be analyzed?

Currently I have a decent plan of how this will happen.  I will create varying categories, based on the hardware being tested (obviously).  But these categories will be more than just the CPU/GPU speed and score in descending order.  I plan to analyze this data from many different angles, and make it public for the forum, and all of the internet, to see.

How do I submit my score?

Submitting a score is quite simple.  First, I will ask that you complete the test in its entirety and post an AUTHENTIC screenshot.  In the same post include your relevant system specifications.  If a post is incomplete, I'll simply ask for the remainder of the information.

Alright, you've convinced me, where do I download PCMark 8?

Simple, right here: http://www.futuremark.com/benchmarks/pcmark8

Scroll down to the near bottom of the page, locate PCMark 8 Basic Edition, and select the host of your download.

As it has been pointed out, the download is fairly large, sitting at a size of just over 3 gigabytes.  I realize this is no quick download, but this software has more than a single use.  The ability to use it during troubleshooting, upgrading, or purely for system testing will prove to be helpful down the road.  If this deters many of you, but you still wish to make a contribution, simply putting your system specs and information in the post would be fantastic.

Link to spreadsheet and other relevant information.

Coming soon. For now, all that I ask is that you complete the benchmark and submit results.  I will get the spreadsheet and leaderboard running as soon as I am given data.

This is the part where I say thank you for taking the time to read through this entire post, and tell you all that you're wonderful people.  I hope that we can get this rolling, and I am very excited to present this to all of you.

I would like to, just so I know what temps and performance I get before I upgrade, and also to help another member to accumulate information to share with the internets for a better understanding and all... But.

3.1GB download, pretty much the only thing holding me back, because I have just 10GB for the next 10 days, which is not a good GB/day ratio for me.

Hopefully you get enough results for whatever you plan to do, good luck.

I understand that it is a large file download, but it can be continually used for your own practices, also.  Right now the quality vs. quantity argument is equal on both sides.

I'd recommend putting not only a spreadsheet into your OP, but also include other things such as "Avg Temp" to the list, since its a very popular question on our forums to ask "did ___, is this temp normal?"

That is definitely something I had planned on recording.  I currently have an abundance of data-types regarding the system test that will be analyzed written onto a piece of paper, which will ultimately be converted into the soon-to-be datasheet.

I'm downloading it now. Do you want us to post our results on this thread?

However selfish this may sound, I would prefer to have usable internet over adding one set of data to your spreadsheet tonight.

Once my internet usage resets, I will gladly download the program and help you with your project, but until the 14th of January 10+ GMT I won't be adding my results, sorry.

I'd come up with a template if I were you. I am managing the LTT 3D Mark thread and spread sheet. Talk to the people what they want, think what you need and show them a layout.

That would be the most convenient.  That way I can easily reach someone who has a question, or needs to update their data.

Also, thank you for taking the time to do this.

Not selfish at all, nor should you be sorry.  I completely understand. To be totally honest, in your situation I would do the same thing.  I appreciate the support, and look forward to your results!

Right now I am messing around with some spreadsheets and making a list of what data should be analyzed.  People's input on what to study is more than appreciated.

Right, well, hopefully by that time my other components will arrive to give a more "normalised" result, atm I'm using a coffee table as my case, which I'd suspect would yield quite higher temps with only 3 rudimentary fans lol.

I'd like to help you out with fields for the spreadsheet, but I have no idea how or what PCMark benchmarks, and I'm just about done for today.

I'm trying to imagine what your setup looks like right now...

Anyways, feel free to help.  If you have any ideas just post them here, or send me a direct message.  I am also about to head to bed, as it's getting quite late.

Do NOT use OpenCL acceleration, as that will cause a sway in scores and trend.  You can do any combination of the three tests.  They will all be categorized separately.
