I hear people say that back plates are bad as they make mr gpu hotter. Other people say the opposite of that so which to trust. Anyone here compared temps.

Most reports I've seen say it lowers the temperature by 3-5C. I've never seen reports say that it has gotten hotter.

Basically, it's just giving more surface area to the heat generated by the individual components on the GPU PCB, and that's why it helps cooling.

It would take the heat from various locations and give it a much larger outlet. It doesn't have very good contact with the parts, but it's something.

For example, the RAM could be hotter than the rest of the PCB, but it's transferring heat to the backplate that has a lot more surface area than the RAM section does, and is made of metal (most of the time), so thermal conductivity is semi-high (as compared to the PCB itself). Think of it like a far less efficient extra heatsink on top of the one on the other side of the PCB.

Well, if you have ram chips on the back of the gpu its quite good because it cools the chips. If not its just for looks and only helps to stabilize the card a little bit.

from what I hear it can keep the temperatures down for longer periods of time, until the backplate it self heats up,but unless it's actually built like a heatsink, with fins and all,it can't dissipate the heat efficiently

though it will add to the rigidity.

Not to mention it adds a freely paint-able surface to your PC. That can turn out epic.

Yea agreed, I'd like either a white or black GeForce GTX 780 with a matching back plate, that would look pretty sexy:)
