650m gpu issues?

Go to solution Solved by orphyn09,

Alright, so basically it's my understanding from another person on another forums that the issue is with Nvidia's 320.xx drivers, and that rolling back will not solve the issue, only a clean installation of windows.

So that people who may read this see:

STAY AWAY FROM 320.XX DRIVERS. UPDATE ONLY TO 314.

Recently I have been experiencing issues with running certain games, where I will run them, my screen will flicker, and either they simply don't start or I get an error message of some sort. (for Skyrim it says: "Failed to initialize renderer. Unknown error creating the renderer." For certain other games I've had messages about DirectX.)

Some games work fine, although I am unsure if that is simply because they are using integrated graphics- I would assume so as the frame rates are not especially high.

Certain things also seem to almost not be detecting my graphics card, such as Nvidia's auto-detect gpu (on their website) for driver installations.
Unfortunately I don't have an exact timeline for when the issues started occurring, but I noticed it mostly after downloading the latest drivers from Nvidia (320.18), especially when GeForce experience couldn't detect any games on my system.

Things I have tried:
-Restarting
-Uninstalling and reinstalling 320.18
-Uninstalling 320.18 and reinstalling older drivers that had worked.
-Running dxdiag- nothing seems amiss
-Installing latest DirectX drivers from microsoft-says they are current.
-Keeping Windows updates up to date
-bashing my head against the wall

-reinstalling factory drivers

-manually going through the nvidia control panel to force games to use the gpu

-Ran Heaven, said it was running off my gpu. It was on the present extreme mode, and while it only got ~10 fps the max temp I saw was 67, which wouldn't indicate any overheating issues. Only ran it for two loops, though.

General specs:
i7-3610QM
12GB Ram
Nvidia 650m 2GB
Windows 7 Home Premium

Forcing certain games to run in windowed mode, such as Skyrim and Guild Wars 2 allows them to run without the flicker nonsense, however they still only run off of integrated graphics (based on how poorly they run, even on low settings)

have you tried doing a clean install of the drivers via the Nvidia installation menu?

it should give you the option of "custom" before the installation starts.

pick that.

and then there should be a UI with all the nvidia driver parts with boxes next to them, giving you the option to pick what to install.

under that there should be another box that says perform a clean install.tick that box and click next, and let it install.

Update: After completely removing drivers, cleaning my registry with cc cleaner, and installing nvidia's 314.22 driver, Skyrim now detects the 650m, allowing me to run on ultra at ~30fps compared to like 15 fps on low with integrated.

However, it still refuses to run fullscreen, and some other games are still giving me errors with regards to Direct X, even if I make them run with my gpu via the Nvidia Control Panel.
