Graphics (VGA) Drivers

Go to solution Solved by Speedbird,

Hey everyone,

I recently built my brother a PC, and while for the foreseeable future he will be using Intel integrated 4600 graphic, I wanted to test an AMD card I had issues with in my system in his. I am currently installing drivers, both from graphic sources and those for his mobo, and was a little uncertain about the specific logistics of some the the video drivers.

I know I will install the Intel VGA driver from the Gigabyte page for his motherboard, since he will be using mainly integrated graphics (for now), as well as the Catalyst Driver from AMD's site. I am just a little confused by the "AMD VGA driver" provided on the Gigabyte site for the card. Do I really need this driver? It was my understanding that the Catalyst Driver IS the AMD video graphics array driver. On my system when I first installed this card, I simply downloaded both of the graphics drivers, not really thinking about any redundancy, and this time I just wanted to figure it out. I would assume that the Gigabyte "AMD VGA driver" is the card/hardware specific driver, which makes sense to me, except when I started having problems with the card in my system and I took it out, I started using an older AMD card, and never reinstalled any drivers, which if the Gigabyte "AMD VGA driver" was hardware specific, I would have had to, correct?

Any clarification and feedback is greatly appreciated!

System is running Win 8.1 64 bit

GPU driver: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4121#ov

Catalyst driver: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows%208.1%20-%2064

You only need the Catalyst driver. And I don't recommend getting drivers from the board manufacturer, they're usually out-of-date.
