I have an Logitech Z5500 and is pretty good with my xonar d2x.

On topic:If you want something good almost any 5.1 will be enough the difference will be made by the sound card.For movies is a must have but if aim for gaming go for a headset.Why?Most gaming headsets have included sound cards and the quality will be better not the same for 5.1.For 5.1 once again you must have a sound card it makes a huge difference from background sounds to sound direction and bass.

Beware of him that is slow to anger; for when it is long coming, it is the stronger when it comes, and the longer kept. Abused patience turns to fury.

For all in one 5.1 PC sets the Edifier S550 are pretty good.

 

But if you want something serious get a decent amplifier / receiver and some speakers of your choice.

Depends on your budget. The audio-quality however also depends on your sound card. 

 

Not if you skip the soundcard ;)

:P Then it's up to your onboard sound card. Whether onboard or not: no sound card= no audio.

 

I'm just connecting my receiver via hdmi and either bitstream or use wasapi exclusive ^^
