Hey everyone,

I am looking into buying a 970 but I am having trouble deciding what brand to buy. I mainly buy asus and EVGA cards for most builds I do for other people but I have heard that the Gigabyte G1 is also very good. I have never had any problems with Asus or EVGA so I am mainly leaning towards those brands. I want the card that will be quite and a good overclocker. I will not be overclocking the card a lot since I will be playing at 1080p, I will just aim for a moderate overclock. If I get a 1440p monitor in the future I will most likely just get another card. So what do you guys think? Asus, EVGA or Gigabyte? What card is the most quite while still preforming very well?

EDIT: What would you guys think about waiting for when nvidia switches to the smaller manufacturing process? Has anyone heard any news regarding this and when it could be released?

EDIT 2: So I think I am going to go with either the EVGA card or the Gigiabyte. Do you guys know if the EVGA card has the same feature as the Asus one where when the load is below 30% or something like that the fans will turn off? This feature is a must.

It indeed is a hard decision, I'm also stuck between the 3 you listed, though I've heard the gigabyte overclocks like a boss and is a bit cooler, though the asus is quieter, and not sure about evga.

Sigh... another 970 topic. Let me quote myself:

Regarding the G1: I'll be honest, the price they ask for a backplate, blue led, and a factory OC (that you'll override anyway) is just absurd. If you are determined to get the G1, you might as well just get the regular Gigabyte Windforce edition and save yourself some nice money.

Onto the strix: overpriced. They ask for a crapton of money, and what do you get: less OC than other brands, higher temp than SOME other brands (Msi, Gigabyte and EVGA), and -supposedly- the most quiet card. Oh yeah? Look at this source here, it might shock you. And even if it was all within margin of error, the MSI Gaming 4G is just as quiet, while costing much less.

About EVGA: good brand. However, you are paying extra money (when compared to other brands) to gain a better customer service. Naturally, if you ever need it, they are just unbeatable at it; but most of the time, you might just never having to use it, so that is somewhat wasted money. And I find their coolers so ugly that it hurts, but that's me. Still, they offer bigger warranty than other brands, and they also cover you in overvolting and watercooling, something no one else provides.

Zotac tends to be the cheapest on it's standard model; however, performance is the worst, and it is almost as hot (if not more) than reference. And the AMP cards, I've read reports about headaches to OC, but also heard a guy saying it was just as any other card, so.... It's still overpriced, don't buy it, waste of money.

Speaking of MSI: That's the "joker of all subjects, master of none" card. It doesn't get 1st place in any particular category: silence, OC, temps, etc. BUUUUT, it get's 2nd place in pretty much every single one of them at the same time. So it's the best "overall" card, suited for most people. Their only "flaw" is the red color scheme, which may not be of your liking. And if you prioritize one aspect over another (say... you want the absolute coolest card you can), this brand won't offer you what you want.

All of that said, assuming normal use, my recommendation is either the MSI Gaming 4g or the Gigabyte Windforce. If one is a lot cheaper than the other, get that. If they are just about the same price, you can choose based on looks and features, they are both worthy your money; I'd give preference to the MSI, though.

If you really care about the appearance of your PC and happen to have a window, that Reference 970 looks pretty dam good.

Less oc? Please educate me and give me a source for asus

There are many that support my claim, but ONE of these sources is on my post, so please read carefully. If you are lazy, a second source can be found here.

That is only natural. For starters, it has access to less power than other brands, with only a humble 8pin connector. Second, this card, in theory, prioritizes silence above all else; the cooling is "lackluster", as it's trying to be silent, rather than efficient.

When overclocking, every silicon is different. And if you have ever watched Linus's videos, he always meantions "Who is this product actually for". This card is made for a person who prefers silence over all else

Dude.... have you actually looked at the links I posted? It's clearly there: MSI (stock) is more silent than Asus (stock).

I'm not even going to speak about the silicon. You know that is a dumb argument.
