I recently bought a msi Dominator pro gt70 off of ebay.  My problem is that some times when I wake up my computer from sleep it sometimes seems to have crashed and gives me the "start windows normally" screen.  It seems that the longer it is sleeping the more likely it will crash, when it sleeps over night it almost always has crashed.

laptop specs

I have windows 7 Ultimate, version 6.1.7601 SP1 Build 7601.

I have a i7-4930MX CPU 3.00GHz.

32 GB of ram, it also says I have 63.8 GB of Virtual Memory (I have no idea what this is)

(edit: also I have raid 0 (I think) over 3 ssds)

my bios version is: MSI_NB - 1072009 E1763IMS.30W 1763IMS.30W (used this to find it) I am not sure how to check for updates for my bios.

Virtual memory is found on the storage drives. It is a hidden partition that Windows uses for swapping things in and out of RAM if it becomes full.

Putting the computer to sleep does no harm to it.

My shot in the dark based on the information you've provided is the laptop is being woke from sleep by "X" then proceeds to stay on til it performs an emergency shut down from low battery or heat if you keep it in a bag. Disable auto sleep based on time in control panel, plug it in, leave the screen up, put it on a table, then make it sleep before you go to bed. If you wake up and it is on then something is waking it up. The next step would to find the offending program / hardware. Though you can always check through event viewer for clues. Maybe the dump files too if you think it has blue screened.

As tmlhalo said, ideally you need to find out what kind of crash first, if it's BSODing then "bluescreenview" can help, decent program that'll read the dump files and give you some kind of error code and a hint towards what to search for

I said crashing, I guess what I meant was it would give me the "windows did not shut down successfully. if this was due to the system not responding or...." screen.  Which means it was force shutdown, but its a crash if I did not mean to do it isn't it?

I'm not exactly sure what happens, I turned off the sleep in the power options under "change plan settings".  I left the computer open all night and manually put it to sleep.  It did not wake up, or at least I don't think it did, my programs were still open, but it took a while to wake up.  It may have been that the hard drive turned off.  I uninstalled a few programs last night, but it may just have been luck that it did not crash, ill just close the lid tonight and see if it happens again.

Ok, it seems it was just luck that it did not shut down last before, it has done it twice sense then, I have no idea what you tell to you guys, here is the "Error" in event viewer:

Out of curiosity I would like to know if this same problem happens after waking from hibernation instead of sleep. If hibernation is disabled you can re enable it using these steps.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920730

Main reason I'm curious about that is sleep keeps the data in RAM with a very low power state versus hibernation which writes the contents of the RAM to a spot on the HDD / SSD then turns off. When hibernation wakes it transfers the session back onto the ram and resumes. I'm thinking if the issue goes away with hibernation then we need to check out the RAM. If it doesn't then we may be looking at HDD / SSD or software related issues. Neither event id told me anything too interesting. 6008 seems to be complaining that the pc was issued a shutdown command it didn't expect and 41 is just that the last shutdown wasn't clean. I'll have my friend take a closer look at them tomorrow, he is better with software logs than me.

If the OP is using Hybrid Sleep, both things will happen. It'll keep the content in RAM, and write the contents to the boot drive.

Thank you for the catch. TheMineBench, here is some instructions to get to the hybrid sleep settings.

http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/activate-hybrid-sleep-on-windows-pcs.html

Although this adds one more variable to experiment. If hybrid sleep is on then turn it off, if behavior continues then move on to the hibernation test. If behavior stops then there may be an issue with using hybrid sleep. If it is already off then proceed to trying hibernation.

OK I enabled hybrid sleep, but in not sure how to activate it. I'm about to go on a 20 hour drive, I hope it just activates automatically.

When you enable Hybrid Sleep, the Hibernation option disappears because Hibernation and Sleep are being smashed together. Essentially, they're being used at the same time. If you want to utilize Hybrid Sleep manually, put your computer to sleep from the Start Menu.

Well, I opened my computer and it gave me something that looks like this (not my picture).  (Edit: I forgot to mark down the error code, ill do it next time)

From what I can find related to that and related to your symptoms, I've found

1) Possibly related to a display driver. If your corresponding graphics card maker for any new drivers.

2) Possibly related to a virus. If you need a free one, I usually recommend MalwareBytes

3) Possibly related to damage to the registry from a previous virus. Most people recommend CCleaner, I tend to like System Mechanic more. System Mechanic has a free version but not all the safety / repair tools are unlocked in the free version. It will fix registry problems for free. For the things it detects but won't repair for free, if you can send a screen cap.

http://www.iolo.com/downloads/download-system-mechanic/

(the free version is the smaller text in the middle)

4) Corrupted / issues with hiberfil.sys (though this file is only related to hibernation as far as I can tell, shouldn't be related to the sleep issue.) So going to put this to the side for now.

Ever sense I got my computer I've used Kaspersky, my display driver is up to date (its nvidia, I use nvidia experience).  So I'm going to guess its a registry problem (because I got it on ebay).  Once again, I am still in the middle of a long drive, so ill work on it when I get home tomorrow. (Edit/Note: the error code I got is 0xc0000411)
