GPU Generations Question

Ishenferi

I'm still relatively new to PC building, and am waiting for my student loan return to buy my PC parts hopefully in February. I was wondering how often new generations of GPUs (Or any parts, really) are released? I plan on going with SLI Strix 970's, but I'd wait a few months if 10xx's or something are right around the corner.
