Hi, I can't decide between Gigabyte Windforce G1 or the GALAX Infinity Black Edition? I can get them for around the same price(~£5) however the GALAX has an actual NEW game included because of overclockers's deal. Also the GALAX has a 'no coil whine guarantee'. So, I'm really stuck

What would you get and why? Thanks :)

G1 is trash. Usually, they want a crapton of money to add a blue led, a backplate, and a factory OC (that you'll override anyway) over the Windforce edition. Seriously, save yourself the money. Look at the Windforce prices and it -should- trounce over the Galax.

Other than that... I really don't know how well the Galax performs over it. The extra price might be worth it, but I don't think it is.

G1 is best OC'er out of the 970 range. They're all pretty close overall but calling it trash is like talking out of your ass.

Not on Amazon?..

I dunno, all the suppliers I've checked with said to email them after I receive the card and they will send the choose your path promotion code.

I'm not comparing the G1 to other 970s. I'm comparing the G1 with... the G1 itself, but stripped of it's backplate and led. It's the very same card. And the amount of money they ask for this upgrade that doesn't benefit performance in anyway is just so big. That's a ripoff. Hence "trash".

I'd go with the galax if you don't really care about buying a big name. The free game is totally worth it imo, especially if you planned on getting one anyways.

Edit: that coil whine garantue is awesome aswell. Thastw actually justifies a RMA process in case you get coil whine. A nice move by galax.

Maybe read a review if the cooler is loud or something, otherwise, the galax looks like a winner.

who cares...

It has flawless 5 star review on ocUK and almost all of them say it's silent.

Don't trust the simple word "silent". Because what does it mean? It could either be:

  1. A silent freak using the card in an open test bench in the middle of nowhere.
  2. A guy using the card on a closed case with a noisy AC living right by an avenue (like me).

Unless the same setup is used to compare different cards, this word is meaningless. For instance, I have a Windforce card; I KNOW it's not a very quiet model out of the 970s sea of options, but I still think it is "silent", due to the setup I have at home.

Depends on region. Where I live, the G1 is 35 euro cheaper then MSI and 25 Euro cheaper than Strix, plus it performs better so it's a no brainer. If it was more expensive than the other by about 20 euro I probably won't consider it. It is far from trash though.

Well it doesn't mean its loud for sure. For the average user it's 'silent' or 'quite'

Duuuuuuude, learn to read pleeeeeease. Not once I mentioned the MSI, nor the Strix, nor any other brand. Learn to read. I'm comparing THIS MODEL with THIS OTHER MODEL.

I was just talking about them because you're specifically calling the G1 trash due to it's price, m8.

Actually the non-g1 also has a plastic shroud instead of metal and less heatpipes.

Yeah, some say the G1 is silent too. However it idles at 0,9 Sone and under load it is 1,4 Sone. In comparison the Asus Strix has 0,0 Sone at idle and 0,7 Sone at load.

Anyways, I'd still get the galax

who cares...

I have that info from a hardware magazine that i trust. I actually looked again and the galax is also in there. it's not a big test, just a sum up. The Galax has 0,3 Sone at idle and 4,2 Sone at load (80% fan speed) Which is as loud as a TV at room volume. So if you care about silence i guess you'll have to do some magic on the fan curve in MSI afterburner or get the G1. Don't rely on my infos though, try to get some sophisticated reviews of the card/cooler.

who cares...

What you get with the G1 edition instead of the windforce:

- Blackplate

- Metal shroud around the fans instead of plastic

- Twice as many heatpipes

- the blue LED lit windforce logo

- and the most important is that the GPU is sorted and the G1 editions are guranteed better overclockers and more power efficient (not by a lot of course but it matters)

Answer tot the original question:

I have a G1 970 and i am happy with it, it can overclock to 1.5 Ghz easily with the temperatures under 80C and the fans spinning at 80%.

But there are 2 drawbacks:

-It is 31cm long and doesnt fit into a lot of cases

-If its creating a lot of frames, like over 200fps, it has a noticable coil whine, but locking fps solves the problem, though it is not that easy in some cases.

I can't say anything about the galax one.
