Happy Holidays!

I'm planning an ultra small build, which is currently going to be

  • Motherboard: Asus Maximus VI Impact
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-4771
  • RAM: G.Skill F3-2400C10D-8GTX
  • GPU: Asus GTX 970 DirectCU Mini OC
  • Storage: SanDisk Extreme II 240 GB
  • Case: Jonsbo V3+ (also known as Rosewill Legacy V3 Plus, DIYPC V3Plus or Cooltek Coolcube)
  • Case fans: 4x Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX (on the back as intakes)
  • PSU: Silverstone SX600-G
  • CPU cooler: Noctua NH-L12 (bottom fan only)

I already have the bolded components in my current (too-large) PC, so the idea is to transfer those plus the new components into the smaller case.

My main question to you guys is about cooling. I mainly use my PC for university, with the most demanding things during semester probably being getting MATLAB to solve a ~15 minute equation or watching 1440p 60 fps video and Youtube through SVP. Also, I may play GTA V on the weekends in 1440p when it comes out.

Do you think the combination of components and cooling will be alright? Some things to remember to consider are

  • Maxwell's efficiency
  • the extra space in the case for airflow afforded by the use of an SFX PSU and the included flat power cables compared to using an ATX one as it was designed for
  • if I get this I'll run it upside down (I don't care about aesthetics) so the face that the GPU will be drawing cool air from (the 'bottom', which will become the top) is more open, as opposed to being right next to the floor
  • the case usually runs in a pretty open space with reasonable airflow
  • I live in Sydney Australia where the ambient temperature ranges from ~15C in winter to >30C in summer

A future consideration is that when Intel Z170 comes out, I'll be looking to replace the 2.5" SSD with an M2, freeing up more space due to removing SATA and power cables and the drive itself. What about the cooling then?

Thanks!
