Sims 3 for Mac?

On origin, Sims 3 says it works with os x. I assumed this meant the game always works on os x, but I bought it through steam and it doesn't work... It says it doesn't support os x. Does it only work for Mac if you buy it off of origin? That doesn't make sense

There are two versions, the windows and osx version. EA only sells the osx version on orign
