I am sort of new to the PC world and was wondering if anyone could help guide me in the right direction. I want to build a mid-range gaming PC for around $600-$700 US. Here is my list of parts:

CPU: AMD FX-6300 Vishera

GPU: Gigabyte R9 290x (4GB model)

PSU: Corsair CX500M

Mobo: MSI 970 Gaming

RAM: Team Zeus 1600 8GB (2X4 GB)

Storage: WD Blue 1TB

Any help is appreciated.

For gaming, you want Intel.  Even if its an i3, it will outperform an FX6 and 8.  Not to mention, an FX6/8 will bottleneck a 970.

Do you live near a Microcenter by chance?  Do you need an operating system? monitor? peripherals?  Able to reuse anything from an old build?

Go for the pentium g3258 and a z97 mobo, then oc the hell outta it. (I'd suggest getting a hyper 212 evo or similar to go along with it so you can push the overclock higher)

Overall the build looks fine, though you may want to drop the GPU down a little bit and put a case in there...

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

Don't go with the 290x unless you are getting it at dirt cheap prices. Go for the 970 instead. Less power, less heat, more performance, more overclocking head room in the future.

Cheap out on the RAM, go with the cheapest DDR3 you can possibly find, won't hurt any performance at all.

Go with a G3258 and a good z97 board. More features, future proof. Once you have the money, and broadwell is launched, buy an i5.

Buy an SSD, they are super cheap. 120GB from Adata or Crucial or Silicon Power. Seriously, it will make your everyday usage so much snappier, you'll thank me later.
