HI

This is the situation: I have a Sabertooth Z97 mark 1 motherboard and a Corsair obsidian 750d case.

If I were to disable the secondary Usb header/controller on the board (I bleive i'm able to do that via the Bios), would i regain one or more of my PCIE lanes?

Potentially I could disable the second Ethernet controller aswell. :D

This could open up the possibility to go sli and have a sound card :o

Do any of you guys know if that's a possibility?

USb does not work off of the lanes of your CPU so it will have no effect. Also I have a sound card in a 1x slot and my graphics card still runs at 16x (Instead of 15x or 8x) so sound cards in a 1x slot will run off of the chipset lanes.

Wait so it is possible to do sli on the 16 lanes of the cpu AND soundcard + networkcard + raidcard on the chipset? therefor filling the board completely. (Not calculating in the physical constraints!)

Oh, raidcard might work off of the CPU lanes depending on the slot you put them in. You could always just try it and see what happens. Install everything and if the SLI won't work then something is taking CPU lanes

It was a hypothetical question: I don't own sli/raidcard/soundcard :D

Looking at the manual it says for IRQ assignements that the lowest pcie 16X slot is shared with Sata #0 and the SMBUS controller.

Hmu, would pluggin something into the pcie 16x slot disable the intel sata controller? or just share bandwidth?

Oooooooh

I do think a raid card needs 4x or 8x which runs off of the CPU lanes I think.

I found this: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2307773/pci-lanes-4790k.html

Apparently the smaller/lower lane slots all pass by the Chipset

Correct (Just found the same and similar threads) but some raidcards are 8x which require a 16x physical which run off the CPU lanes.

I have found several raidcards with a 4x connection. So those should run via the chipset right?

and as for soundcards. There are plenty of them that require only a 1X slot

One complaint i must make now: Whoever put together that manual forgot one crucial thing: A freaking diagram of the connections!
