I need to host a minecraft server on a dedicated machine with ~20 users.  Budget is ~$500 (can be more if there is substantial value to spending more).  Where should I start, as I have no experience with building servers?  Thanks guys :)

Couldn't you Rent a Server online?

too unreliable +limited flexibility with adding mods :(

Well I'm an expert on this matter, as I was owner of "coolax-gaming" and had 5 servers generating a $600 profit every month.

Since minecraft servers don't run that well, get a g3258 with 8 gigs of ram and a cheap mobo. And a 1tb hdd.

Or exodus host lets you buy a custom one

Lets all ripperoni in pepperoni

Exodus dosent give you minecraft server, it gives you a Linux server, install the server on your own.

nope, never needed it.

Although, if you are under 18, managing a server with 500+ players is hard and stressful don't do it.

I quit it

this a non-profit server for friends, so that shouldn't be an issue

I'd actually suggest going for a 120 or 240GB SSD instead of the 1TB HDD as it will make shutting down/starting up the server a hell of alot faster, the current host I have (internet is too shitty to host it myself) has all the servers running on SSDs, and my tekkit classic (minecraft 1.2.5 modpack) server can fully reboot (over 20 plugins) within 20 seconds.

Non profit for friends? Well then your friends don't live on the other side of the world then use your own machine. :)

I have no local friends so LAN isn't really feasible, therefore server.  Also LAN lags my rig...
