If i were you I would scrap the 980 and go with a 970 to save money or if you have another $125 you can spend go SLI 970's instead since two 970's is about 1.5x better than a single 980. Also since your spending so much money on the rest of your rig id change the motherboard to one that can handle SLI maybe switch to this

Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI

My advice is to downgrade to an i5 if this is your first rig, if you aren't doing anything that necessarily requires or uses hyper-threading fully.   Some of the non-techies I talk to think an i5 has 5 cores and an i7 has 7.  nope, an i7 is the same as the i5 just with 4 more virtual cores which only really help in productivity applications such as photoshop, vmware and etc.

I wouldn't recommend a B85 motherboard for that, if you get something like an i5 4460 which can't overclock get a H97-Motherboard, there are Gigabyte gaming H97-motherboards.   Or if your getting a K variant get a Z97 motherboard, Asus, MSI and Gigabyte are the most trusted brands for Motherboards.

If your playing on a 1080p monitor stick with a GTX 970, thats more than you need.   If your playing on more higher resolutions the GTX 980 could come in useful.   And in all honesty, I'd recommend a Noctua-u14s  CPU cooler its more than sufficient and is quieter and probably easy to install.

WD Red's are made for Raid, so I recommend a WD blue or a Seagate Barracuda.

Then, I'd also recommend getting a better case just because its what I would do, such as the Corsair 330R, Fractal Design Define R5 or Cooler Master N600.

Also, get an 850 pro instead of an 840 pro, seriously.  Its a no brainer.

Hope this helps dude :)

I take it that the machine will be used for job related video editing. You will also be doing some gaming.

You have a couple of choices to make. If you do not want to overclock then

  • get a Xeon E3-1231 V3 and
  • an H97, or an SLI capable Z97 motherboard if you plan to get multiple gpu.
  • use the stock cooler, i.e. do not get the H110

If you do want to overclock then you should get a Z97 motherboard.

In my opinion the GTX 980 is a good choice for this build. While it is expensive, it will provide better gpu accleration when video editing and rendering.
