Apparently this is a common problem but I can't find a solution. My memory usage is at 95%, it was fine yesterday. I just installed this OS, I heard Windows 8.1 is supposed to be less recourse intensive not use 95% of my 8GB of RAM. It's lagging so badly right now, please help! Thanks in advance :)

Sounds like you might have a lot of programs running in the back ground or a lot of bloat ware. Or there is a possibility that you might have viruses on your hard drive, I know its unlikely since you just installed windows but its still possible. Because I have windows 8.1 installed on my Macbook pro through a dual boot and when im on the windows side when im just setting at the desktop with nothing running it uses between 1 and 2 gigs of ram out of my total 16.

I just installed the OS, there can't be viruses already. The biggest process is Google Chrome with 30MB.

Ok but how many of those processes are running it all adds up pretty fast and also i would open the task manager and watch for about 3-5 minutes and see if there is anything that spikes your ram/cpu usage. Even a really big spike that lasts 1-2 seconds if it happens on a consistant basis will effect your performance. If i were you i would un-install every program that you have put on it since you put windows on and go to ninite.com and re-download them through there it will put them all back on but without all of the bloat ware that usually comes with them. Do it 1 program at a time and youll be able to see which one does the trick.

After that it's just a bunch of Windows processes barely using 1MB.

question did you just build this computer? if so did you put the ram in the correct slots for dual band usage?

I built it a while ago, I just did a recent upgrade which involved the adding of an SSD. I just installed the OS on the SSD, the RAM is in the correct slots. I looked at the processes again and every time I open Chrome 4 processes open and use 30 + MB each.

Sounds like you might have gotten a lot of bloat ware if opening chrome starts 4 processes. Do like i said in my earlier post un-install the programs you have downloaded since doing the fresh install of windows and then go to Ninite.com and re-download everything from there. The site will install everything without all the bullshit bloatware that normally gets added in. Also if you dont already have an anti-virus program ninite has avg anti-virus on there which is free and is a really good anti-virus program.

I was using AVG 2015 but it seemed to be contributing to the problem so I uninstalled it though. It didn't make much of a difference so I will re-install it. Upon restarting my PC the memory usage went down to about 30% while installing a game on Steam at the same time. I heard that it can be a problem with my drivers so I'm installing all the ones that are optimized for Windows 8.1 (specifically Intel Rapid Storage technology) and hopefully it will fix the problem. I was using my PC perfectly fine last night so the only thing I can think of that would cause this problem is AVG 2015.

I have never had an issue with AVG on either the mac or windows side of my mac where did you download your version from?

@yourdad165, have you tried something that I've suggested?

I used that program you suggested, and it only confirmed what I already knew. My non-paged pool is taking up 3GB of RAM while the active pool is about 100MB. I have no idea what either of these are nor how to fix it at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

@yourdad165 , with RAMMap you can check what process are allocating that huge space, just take a look at the Processes tab, order it by total size and check who's the culprit. You can check that with Task Manager too, go to Details tab, select columns and show non paged memory. When you find who's the culprit, if not a system process, kill it right away.

Nothing is using a high amount of memory.

Are you sure? If that much nonpaged pool is allocated is because some process is using it. If no process is allocating that memory, maybe you should check your RAM for problems.

I didn't have these problems with Windows 7 or the Windows 10 preview, this is my first time using 8.1. People are saying it's a design intended to utilize unused memory so that basic operations are faster. If this is the case then it shouldn't slow down my system though.

Windows always used memory as cache to increase performance, but you have some kind of bug there. Nonpaged pool with that size is clearly a problem.

There must be a culprit and you will solve your problem when you find it.

It could be a program or a driver leak, the first one is easier to fix, the second one could be fixed by upgrading your drivers to stable ones (you can use Iobit Driver booster to help you) or discovering what driver is causing that issue (you can use Microsoft Driver Kit software to find it, but it's not that quick to solve http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff560135(v=vs.85).aspx ).

Running Lobit Driver Booster, it seems like a pretty cool program.
