Hi,

ive replaced the noisy as all hell hard drive with an ssd. Im now installing windows 8 off of a disc and its asking for a cd key.

with my hp laptop, it kept the cd key in the bios, which made it easy.

So where's the cd key?

Put your noisy HDD drive back in, launch windows, run a keyfinder tool (plenty of them online, just read reviews to ensure it's not spyware) which will find your key in the registry, shut down, plug SSD and install windows using that key.

You can also find it yourself in the registry http://www.isunshare.com/product-key-finder/find-product-key-for-windows-8-or-8.1.html

The CD must be a original from MS. Happened to my HP as well, luckly I bought Win8 for one of my builds and used that and it works.

i had copied the cd to a usb key, im now trying the disk

Put your HDD back in and run HP Recovery so it goes back to factory defaults, then use keyfinding tool to recover your key.

The other ways is if, the HDD still boots, the create a set of recovery disc and use that on your SSD.

All laptop comes with a recovery partition. Check your manual on how to access the recovery partition

it doesn't. the manual says to use windows 8 system image recovery with a windows disc

I figured it out with out the recovery, apparently the tards over at microsoft figured that 8.1 keys should not work with 8.0 discs. So i had to find an 8.1 iso image online, I found one at ms's site but the download servers where down and about once every 20-30 minutes would be up for a super brief period of time. microsoft really managed to make a simple ssd swap near impossible.
