Hi

After I assembled my computer and installed all drivers, I fired up for some games to see how it was running.

I mainly play WoW, and sometimes Far cry 4, the computer ran well but I wasn't immensely impressed.

It runs with around 100 fps when I'm running around by myself and questing, however when raiding in larger groups the fps can easily drop to 30-35, and after a couple of loading screens it keeps dropping further.

At one point it ran with only 5 fps, and I had to restart the game to get it back to around 70fps.

I later found out, reloading the ui increased the fps back to the normal state of around 70 (while in a 20man raid) but it kept dropping after some time, as if it was overheating and trying to minimized stress.

The temp. in the computer seems however alright even during times when it starts to drop fps.

I have not done any overclocking what so ever, I have only changed the fan speeds (very little though), to potentially cool of the pc better.

I did not want to do any overclocking before knowning if there were any issues when running on normal mode.

Far cry 4 has run well for the couple of hours I've have played it, but slight fps drops every now and then.

Need some help to get this running optimally, since I hoped this would atleast run 80+ fps steadily during raids.

I'm not a very experienced techie, if possible just try and treat me like I'm a rookie.

Bios: American Megatrends Inc. version: 1204, date 06/20/2014

OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit OS

Specs:

Intel core I5-4690k

Asus Z97-A

HyperX fury black 16GB (2x8GB)

Corsair HX750

CM nepton 280L

Asus GTX 970 4GB strix

Build is very similar to the one from "Holiday buyer's guide - 2014" third option, except less memory on the ssd and hdd, and only a single GPU.

it's cpu not gpu when you overload it.

Check the cpu performance*

When I looked at the performance in task manager, while the game is running. The CPU performance is varying from 50-75% use. I really have no idea if this is good or bad? and in any case how do I make it better?

pretty much,

Thats kinda much, but how much is it when the frame drops?

With that performance it was running with 45-60 fps (which is still low in my opinion for the computer), this was in a bit more populated area but still.

Edit:

Just did a restart of the game, still running with the 45-60 fps in the area but seems that the CPU performance is around 45-55% at the moment.

is your ssd like 90% or more full because if it is it can cause the drops because of loadingspeeds but i dont think that is it

More on the topic, it seems that the fps gradually decreases and eventually end up being fairly poor. Sometimes it feels like it's affected by me alt-tabbing out of the game and then going back, and sometimes not. CPU levels seems to be steady at around 45% when i'm running in raids (with around 20 other people) and this gives me about 80-90 fps at the start (which then gradually decreases, leading to a /reload of the game to keep having a decent experience).

When i'm playing a lone (solo questing) it doesn't seem like i have a decrease in performance (stable at around 100 fps, which i still thought would be higher, around the 150 ish with this rig).

CPU sometimes spikes to around 60-70% (only for a bit though) but that might be due to loading screens.
